A Nice Extra?

Most people think of a headshot as “just a nice photo for LinkedIn.” But if that’s all you’re doing with it, you’re leaving money and visibility on the table.

Remember, once the shutter clicks, the real ROI begins.

In this episode of Leadership & Personal Branding with Laura Pearman (embedded below), I covered some quick-fire ways to use your headshots. In this updated guide, I’m taking things further. You’ll learn how to treat your headshots as a business asset, not just a photo, and how to evaluate whether what you already have invested in is paying off for you.

Why Headshots Are More Than “Just a Photo”

Headshots are not a vanity project. They’re one of the simplest ways to communicate professionalism, build trust, and strengthen your wider brand identity.

Did You Know?

LinkedIn profiles with professional photos get up to 14x more views than those without. That’s because people make split-second judgments about credibility. A strong headshot sends the message: “I take myself and my work seriously.”

Think of your headshot as brand currency. The question is: how are you spending it?

Use Headshots as a Consistency Tool Across Touchpoints

If someone Googles you, they should see the same recognisable face everywhere they look. That’s what builds instant brand recognition. Think LinkedIn, your website bio, even the little details like your Zoom profile picture or your email signature. When all of these match, it tells people that you are the same professional in every context. It may sound simple, but this kind of consistency does more for your visibility than most people realise.

Get Intentional

It’s also one of the core steps in getting intentional with your Personal Branding. This Touchpoints Diagram expands on that further visually. The goal is to make sure every interaction, online or offline, feels seamless and deliberate.

Going Deeper

Keep Your Credibility Fresh

We’ve all seen that profile picture that’s been hanging around for far too long. The one from three job titles ago, or before someone made a big pivot. Outdated headshots don’t just make you look behind the times; they chip away at credibility. I get it, you preferred yourself younger and maybe lighter, or with more hair on your head (but that’s not the you everyone appreciates today).

My Advice?

Don’t treat your headshot as something you get done once and forget about. I encourage my clients to look at their photos every few months to once a year and objectively ask: Does this still look like me, and does it still represent where my brand is heading? Most people find that twelve to eighteen months is about the sweet spot before things start to feel stale. Keeping your photos up to date is a small but powerful way of showing people that you’re on top of your professional presence.

Deeper than Skin-Deep

It is hugely common that your mindset about how you feel and see yourself will be intertwined with how you feel and see your photos. I haven’t worked with any client to date who didn’t have a differing level of self-confidence hurdles.

If your hurdles are so big that they are affecting your professional growth, progress on that before photography. I’m a big advocate of talk therapy. I also take my mental health and physical health more seriously the older I get. Don’t snooze on this – it permeates everything else in your life. Admitting you have work to do does not make you a failure; it makes you a brave and beautifully self-aware human. We need more and more of those in this world today. Don’t we?

Feel Like It’s A Hash?

You may be thinking that you have made a mess/hash of things to date. Don’t panic or worry. I wrote this round-up on some of the most common mistakes I see the biggest leaders making when it comes to their Personal Brand. Trust me. It’s probably fixable.

5 Mistakes Leaders Make When Building Their Personal Brand

How to Evaluate If Your Last Headshot Was Worth the Investment

A headshot shouldn’t ever be a sunk cost. It should work for you long after the photoshoot is over. One way to tell is to look at how widely you’ve used it. Has it been visible across your social platforms, your email, or even your event or speaker bios? Another is to think about how people respond day to day. Do your new connections recognise you instantly, or do they look surprised when you walk into a room?

The Numbers NEVER Lie

There’s also the harder business evidence. Did you notice a bump in profile views, podcast invites, or client leads after you updated your professional headshot? And did the photo last you at least a year before feeling out of date?

If the answer is yes to most of those, you’ve probably had a return on your investment. If not, it may be that the image itself was fine, but maybe the lack of strategy meant it never pulled its weight. That’s exactly the kind of gap I help my consulting clients close.

Make Your Headshots Work Harder for You (ROI)

Once you have professional images, don’t let them gather dust. The smartest leaders I work with use their headshots as part of a much bigger brand ecosystem. They show up on book covers and in digital products, they become the face of online courses or membership portals, they sit neatly in PR or Media kits and event brochures. They weave their way into launch campaigns and lead magnets.

A Tool Not Decor

The point is: your headshot isn’t just decoration for LinkedIn. It’s a piece of brand collateral that should be everywhere your audience encounters you. When it’s used strategically, it shortens the distance between a prospect seeing you and trusting you.

Is It Time To Get More Strategic?

If you feel like you might be missing some of the core strategy from your last set of professional headshots, let’s get into this. Here is a great place to start on What I do as a Brand Strategist.

Maximise ROI on Shoot Day Itself

A photoshoot shouldn’t be treated as a tick-box task in your diary. Done well, it’s a cornerstone content day. That’s why I encourage my clients to see it as a chance to capture more than just the final polished headshot. Behind-the-scenes clips, short-form video snippets, even quick testimonial soundbites before, during and after the session. All of these moments become marketing gold.

A Shoot-Out into A Content Frenzy

These 4 ladies are a great example. She how each of them used a fast shoot-out session to create months of content for websites, blogging, email newsletters and social media.

As An Author

Christine Clayfield did something similar. She aligned her headshots with her push to grow an author brand. When you approach a shoot this way, you stop seeing it as a worrisome or risky cost and start treating it as an investment with guaranteed long-term returns.

Where Headshots Fit Into Your Bigger Brand Strategy

Headshots are often an important step in building up a visible personal brand. But they’re not the full picture.

In my consulting work, I guide clients through my signature framework:

  • Discovery: Clarifying brand personality and goals.
  • Alignment: Syncing visuals and messaging.
  • Visibility: Amplifying touchpoints (where headshots and other assets sit).
  • Reinvention: Evolving the brand as you grow.

So yes, headshots are essential. In fact, they become exponentially more powerful when paired with strategy. You can find out more about my framework in this blog.

TL;DR – Ways to Get the Most Out of Headshots

Headshots aren’t just photos; they’re a powerful brand asset. That’s why it’s important to use them consistently across your touchpoints. At the same time, keep them fresh so they always feel credible. Next, take the time to evaluate whether your last headshot truly delivered a return on your investment. Then, look for ways to repurpose them across products, services, and campaigns.

Remember, too, that a single shoot day can give you far more than one polished image. Ultimately, when you see your headshots as brand currency, the value goes far beyond LinkedIn.

FAQs: Getting the Most Out of Your Headshots

Q: What’s the best way to use headshots in business?

A: Keep them consistent across all your professional touchpoints. LinkedIn, website, and email signature. Consistency builds recognition and trust.

Q: How often should I update my professional headshot?

A: Every 12–18 months, or sooner if your role, brand, or appearance changes. In fact, outdated photos harm credibility more than you think.

Q: Can headshots help me get more clients?

A: Yes. Used strategically in campaigns, PR, and lead magnets, headshots increase visibility, credibility, and client trust.

Q: How do I know if my headshot is working for me?

A: Look for signs: increased profile views, podcast invites, or recognition at events. If it’s aligned and opening doors, it’s working.

Q: Are professional headshots worth the investment?

A: They are when treated as a brand asset, not just a picture. A strong headshot supports launches, speaking opportunities, and media features. If you’re unsure how to make yours work harder, that’s where I can help. Book a free 30-minute chat with me.
