Creating a Brand Niche Isn’t Optional Anymore
When you’re a creative entrepreneur, the hardest person to brand is usually… yourself.
You wear multiple hats. Love big ideas. Also, you hate the thought of being boxed in. And yet, without a clear brand niche, everything from your messaging to your marketing becomes a muddy mess.
In this blog, I’m revisiting a standout conversation I had on my YouTube show with branding expert Amy Caiger. Amy joined me as a guest cocktail correspondent to talk niching strategy. What it really means, why it matters, and how to do it without losing your creative spark.
At the time, Amy was running a successful personal brand mentoring business.
Wine!
She’s since taken a bold pivot, launching Indie Wine Club, a community and subscription experience for people who love thoughtful wine and independent producers. It’s a move that proves she walks her talk when it comes to defining and living a niche. This isn’t just a video transcript blog. It’s a strategic walkthrough, blending Amy’s expert insights with my brand consultant perspective, so that you walk away with a clearer, stronger answer to the question:
How do I create a brand niche that actually fits me?”
Let’s break it down. Watch the full episode of my conversation with Amy Caiger for real-world examples and deeper insights into this strategy.
Why “Niche” Still Triggers Resistance (and Why It Shouldn’t)
For many creatives, the word “niche” feels restrictive. It’s often confused with cornering yourself into a tiny audience or cutting off income opportunities. But the opposite is true.
Niching isn’t about doing less; it’s about doing you, more clearly. It’s a foundational part of any strong niche branding strategy.
When you resist defining your niche, you end up trying to please everyone. Your messaging becomes broad and your content gets diluted. Your audience? Confused at best, indifferent at worst.
It gives you focus, simplifies your decisions, and ensures your dream clients recognise themselves in what you say and how you show up.
It’s also a key ingredient in effective brand positioning that sets you apart.

Amy’s Framework: The 3 Elements of a Strong Brand Niche
Amy Caiger’s take on niching is refreshingly practical. It moves beyond the tired “ideal client avatar” worksheet and offers something far more layered:
1. The Who
This is the client side of your niche. Who are they, sure – but more importantly:
- What are they struggling with?
- What are they dreaming of?
- What do they value?
Forget demographics. Focus on the psychographics. The mindset. The motivations.
2. The What
What do you actually do and how is it different from the rest?
This includes your process, your offer structure, your IP, and your method of delivery. Your niche becomes clearer when your work has a distinct signature.
3. The You
Often overlooked, but arguably the most powerful. The You is your tone, your story, your quirks, your ethics, your energy. It’s how you infuse your work with meaning. Aswell as becoming not just an option, but the only option for the right people.
From a strategic perspective, this is what makes personal brands magnetic.
This approach helps creative entrepreneurs find their brand niche. This is done by connecting their identity, method, and audience with precision.
Escaping the Beige: The Moronic Inferno & Standing Out on Purpose
Let’s talk about the creative apocalypse that is the “Moronic Inferno”. It’s a term I borrowed-slash-mutated from dinner party conversations referencing Dante, mass media, and the modern branding landscape. Heck, creative pursuit in general.
It’s what happens when everything starts to look, sound, and feel the same.
Amy and I agreed: the antidote is owning your difference, loudly.
Victoria Fleming:
- A SaaS sales consultant with purple hair, killer glasses, and more charisma than a TED stage. In a sea of grey suits, she’s unforgettable. (Read more in Victoria Fleming’s blog feature where we explored her personal brand in action.)
Kyne:
- A drag queen who teaches maths on TikTok. Over a million followers. Glamour and logic, combined. A brilliant example of “The What” and “The You” colliding.
Fifi Mason:
- A shy introvert who turned her personality into her positioning. Her blue hair became a conversation starter. Her brand says, “You’re safe here.”
These aren’t gimmicks. They’re reflections of clear, embodied brand niches.

Niching Saves Time, Sanity & Creative Energy
We don’t talk enough about how much time vague branding wastes.
If you’re constantly rewording your website copy, rewriting your elevator pitch, or re-recording your intro reel. That’s a sign your niche isn’t clear. Not sure where to start? This post on whether you need brand guidelines can help anchor your voice and visuals.
Amy made this point beautifully in our conversation: clarity saves energy. It lets you:
- Say no faster.
- Create content more easily.
- Avoid reinventing the wheel every quarter.
In short? Niching buys you back time.
And if you’re wondering how to find your brand niche without second-guessing everything, this clarity-first method is the place to start.

The Real Blockers: Fear, Perfectionism, and Burnout
Now let’s get honest.
Most creatives know they need a niche. But they stall. Why?
Because niching means committing. It means choosing. It means stepping into visibility with something more specific than “I help everyone with everything.”
Amy and I talked about how this shows up as:
- Fear of picking the “wrong” niche.
- Shiny object syndrome.
- Overthinking disguised as research.
- You burn out trying to be everywhere.

Her advice? You don’t have to get it perfect. You have to get it moving.
Done is better than perfect. Choosing is better than drifting. And backing yourself matters more than waiting for consensus.
If you’re in a season of transition or identity shift, this is especially true. For a deeper look at how your brand can evolve with you. Check out Evolving Your Personal Branding: Staying Authentic Through Career Growth. Niching down doesn’t mean locking yourself in it means creating traction.
So… How Do You Create a Brand Niche?
Here’s where we bring it all together:
- Look at your best-fit clients. What do they have in common? What results do they value?
- Review your offer delivery. How do you actually help? What’s your unique process?
- Define “The You.” What makes your work different because you do it.
- Stop aiming for one sentence. A niche isn’t a slogan. It’s a direction.
- Test and refine. Your niche evolves. The first version doesn’t have to be your last.
It’s not another dull Marketing Exercise
Your brand niche isn’t just a marketing exercise. It’s part of an advanced personal branding strategy that helps establish thought leadership, especially for women ready to level up. It’s a declaration of focus. And it’s the first step to building a brand that actually grows.
