Meet the Client

Tina Shaw is a dedicated Olympic weightlifting coach specializing in private coaching for women. She is also passionate about giving back to the sport, volunteering her time to train and mentor junior weightlifters. As an accomplished athlete, she holds multiple titles, including Masters Weightlifter, Northern Gold Medalist, and International Bronze Medalist.

Beyond coaching, Tina is actively involved in the governance of weightlifting, serving as a technical official for the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and a referee for British Weight Lifting (BWL).

Planning the Empowering Professional Women Headshots Session

For this shoot, Tina wanted a balance of gritty northern edge and authentic personal branding. She wanted to showcase her expertise in both boxing and weightlifting, while also positioning herself as a relatable and approachable coach. The goal was to create a set of strong, confident images that reflected her as a professional in the weightlifting scene, but also as someone who empowers others to step into the sport.

Photoshoot Wishlist & Moodboard

Tina’s ideal aesthetic was clear from the start. She wanted a blend of power, authenticity, and raw strength. To achieve this, we focused on several key elements.

First, we aimed for a mix of dynamic action shots — including both boxing and lifting. These shots captured her in motion, highlighting her athletic skill. Next, we chose a setting that felt real, unpolished, and powerful. Importantly, we avoided anything that gave off a glossy fitness magazine vibe. Instead, we leaned into environments that reflected grit and determination.

Adding in Relatability

Finally, we prioritised natural, strength-focused posing. We wanted a mix of intensity and relatability. By combining these factors, we crafted a series of images that showcased Tina’s true essence — as both a fierce athlete and an approachable, inspiring coach.

Wallsend Weightlifting Coach Photography Shoot Day

One standout moment came when we hit a technical hitch with the studio lights while shooting outdoors. Specifically, the wireless sync just wouldn’t connect. At first, it seemed like it might delay the session. Fortunately, I had packed an old-school sync cable. This simple but crucial backup saved the shoot. Without it, we could have lost valuable time and momentum.

Pushing Forward

Beyond that small setback, everything else ran smoothly. In fact, Tina fully embraced the shoot from start to finish. Throughout the session, she delivered a dynamic mix of powerful athletic poses. At the same time, she brought genuine coaching moments that highlighted her warmth and relatability. Together, these elements created a well-rounded, authentic set of images.

Editing & Selection

After the shoot, Tina received a private gallery of images to review. Right away, she took the time to go through each shot carefully. Instead of making selections alone, she worked closely with her coach. Together, they focused on choosing the best shots. Specifically, they paid attention to correct lifting form and showcasing muscle aesthetics. This level of detail ensured the final selections truly reflected her expertise.

Interestingly, the entire process was handled remotely. Despite the distance, Tina maintained full control over the process. In the end, she was able to decide exactly how she wanted to present herself in her personal branding. Ultimately, it was a seamless collaboration that balanced precision with creativity.

Reflections on the Case Study

This shoot with Tina Shaw was a perfect example of how personal branding photography can go beyond just “looking good.” Instead, it can communicate authenticity, authority, and real impact. In many ways, it’s about telling a story through images, not just creating pretty pictures.

Clear Vision

From the very start, Tina had a clear vision for what she wanted. Specifically, she wanted her headshots to reflect her gritty northern edge. At the same time, she needed them to showcase her strength in weightlifting. Yet, they also had to feel relatable and welcoming as a coach. Striking that balance between power and approachability was key. Therefore, it shaped how we planned and executed every part of the session.

Wallsend weightlifting coach photography Results

One of the standout moments during the shoot was watching Tina truly own her space in front of the camera. She wasn’t just posing for the sake of it. Instead, she was demonstrating skill, control, and the deep confidence that comes from years of training and coaching. As a result, these weren’t generic fitness shots. Rather, they became a visual statement of her expertise and leadership in the sport.

Another interesting aspect was the image selection process. Instead of simply choosing the “prettiest” shots, Tina collaborated with her coach. Together, they picked images based on technical form and muscle aesthetics. This was a brilliant example of how professional athletes approach their branding very differently than influencers or business owners.
