I met Christine at #SMMW17 and then in the run-up to #SMMW18 we re-connected on Twitter. After hitting it off like wildfire, Christine decided to book me for a Professional Headshot session during Social Media Marketing World to capture her time there.
Planning Professional Headshots in San Diego
When it came time to plan this session, I knew right away where we needed to go. Based on Christine’s bold style and vibrant vibe, the Gaslamp District was the obvious choice. And honestly? As you’ll see in just a moment, it turned out to be the perfect backdrop.
We didn’t overcomplicate things. Instead, through a quick but focused planning session, Christine and I worked together to develop a clear, concise wish list. This list included several key factors I knew were essential for her San Diego photoshoot.
Adding. Not Replacing
First, we wanted to capture her time in San Diego. But here’s the thing… We weren’t aiming to replace her existing professional headshot. Instead, we wanted to create something new that added to her visual story.
Next, we focused on layering in more narrative. We wanted to deepen the storytelling behind her already established personal brand, adding richness and dimension through these images.
And most importantly? We kept one core element front and center: making sure we captured lots of fun and lots of energy! That was absolutely non-negotiable.

The shoot day was fabulous. I had planned a couple of little routes around Gaslamp going on the method of strolling and shooting. I love to do this, especially with clients I haven’t gotten to know well yet. Walking around and chatting is like having a meeting, mastermind, giggling all the while we’re taking pictures.
Rendezvous At Blo
The US Blow Bar is far more established than our UK counterparts. Blo is a US-Wide Chain. Next time you are stateside, go get your hair fixed!
First Set
With a fresh bounce to the locks, we went straight into some dreamy morning light. A tree was casting this gorgeous dappled effect on the wall. This made our first backdrop.
Yoga Posing in the Gaslamp District
Further down the street, we couldn’t resist pushing the boundaries. So, we became playful delinquents, posing right in the middle of the road. Of course, it was SO worth it! Christine struck a strong Tree Pose, adding an unexpected, dynamic energy to her professional headshots. As we moved through each shot, I guided her to balance boldness with authenticity. Together we created images that truly stand out.
Professional Headshots in San Diego – Finding Red
As soon as we spotted a bold mural of Blondie, I knew we had to stop. Right away, I directed Christine to set up a quick laptop moment to weave into her professional headshots. As a branding strategist and photographer, I always look for unexpected details that strengthen a client’s visual story. This spot, with its vivid colors and edgy vibe, added just the right touch of personality. Together, we made sure every shot aligned with Christine’s bold, authentic brand.
Professional Headshots With The San Diego Trolley
Afterward, we made our way down to the harbour. We were on the lookout for a more open space, somewhere with plenty of room to play and explore. It took a little wandering. But eventually, just near the Exhibition Centre, we struck gold. Right there, we found the train lines for the iconic San Diego Red Trolley which, of course, is bright red (naturally!).
Power Moment
Next came one of my favourite moments. We decided to have a little fun with a practice catwalk sashay. And honestly? Christine nailed it. She was an absolute natural in front of the camera. Then, as if the stars aligned, the timing was perfect. That’s when we captured this absolute gem of a shot, with the trolley rolling past behind her, as if Christine was controlling it with her own magic powers.
