TL;DR
Relying on event photographers for speaker photos leaves too much to chance. To truly elevate your speaking career and reinforce your personal brand. You probably need a branding photographer for speakers who understands how to capture strategic, story-driven images you can use long after the event. In this post, I’ll explain the difference and share real examples. I will also show you how to prepare for your next appearance with brand-building in mind.
Watch the Episode: Branding Photographer for Speakers 101
Want to see this in action? In this episode of a branding photographer for speakers, I break down the biggest mistakes speakers make with their event photography. As well as what a branding photographer does differently to help you stand out. As well as getting booked and building real momentum in your career.
Your Problem with Traditional Speaker Photography instead of a Branding Photographer for Speakers
Let’s be honest. Event photographers have one job: to cover the event. That means they’re briefed by the host, juggling a shot list. The list includes sponsors, breakout sessions and décor. It might even include the fire eaters setting up on the other side of the venue.
If they catch a good moment of you on stage, it’s luck. Not strategy.
And that leaves you, the speaker -whose presence is an integral part of your personal brand – with half-blink shots and odd angles. But also nothing that truly showcases why you command the stage (and how that makes the crowd feel and connect with you). There is a good chance you will “get what you are given”. That’s if the host is generous and able to consider this.
Why?
The event host has hired them with a set brief: “Catch the whole event so that we can sell more tickets next year”. No matter who you are. Your appearance on the stage can only ever be a small fraction of that brief.
Having worked a LOT of events in my photography career. Trust me when I tell you this is an intensive (often undervalued) job in and of itself.
What a Branding Photographer for Speakers Actually Does
As a branding-focused photographer, my job is to focus entirely on you and your wider goals, not the event.
Before the shoot, we align on your goals:
- Is this going to be for your speaker reel?
- Do you need close-ups this time to contrast with older wide shots?
- Is this a prestigious talk you want to use in your media kit?
- What is your strategic plan to parlay this appearance into bigger, better-paid/more prestigious ones?
- What other visual cues can we obtain from this appearance to round out your personal branding? On and off the stage.
Choreography & Articulation
I match the rhythm of your performance style. If you’re high-energy and animated, I plan for action captures that don’t result in weird expressions mid-gesture. If your style is smooth and measured, I wait for those magnetic pauses where your point really lands.
We create a shot list around your strategic goals, not someone else’s event timeline. If you’re planning on going out into the audience or detonating an indoor firework, we plan for the best way to capture this moment photographically.

From Speaking Gig to Brand Ecosystem with Branding Photographer for Speakers
Speaker photos are not just for event recaps. Think of them more as key personal brand assets.
That one shot of you pointing at a slide? It could be the banner image on your lead magnet. The moment you get a laugh from the crowd? Great for LinkedIn. A close-up during your final takeaway? Hello, Reel or YouTube Show intro!
When we treat your speaking engagement as a multi-faceted content opportunity, you walk away with:
- Photos you can reuse across platforms and implement within your business.
- Visual consistency that reinforces your personal brand.
- A media-ready visual library that matches the level you’re playing at.
It’s not about capturing a moment; it’s about building a thought-out personal brand presence.
Real Client Snapshots – My Top 5 as a Branding Photographer for Speakers:
I’ve taken many photos of many different styles of professional speaker. Often this falls into a wider personal branding project together. Which then can be centred on pure content creation, or something bigger.
Roger Edwards
We worked together on a talk that marked a significant milestone in Roger’s speaking career. The brief? Showcase credibility, engagement, and the prestige of the event itself.
The Outcome?
Close-up speaker shots that now live across his LinkedIn, media kit, and YouTube.

Janet Murray
Janet was really ramping up her public speaking when we shot this in Edinburgh. Being the savvy ex-journalist, Janet and I worked on a clear-cut strategy to capture her from the stage.
Off the Stage Angle
But ALSO with delegates straight after her talk.

Victoria Fleming
Victoria brings full force energy to the stage. She’s a whirlwind of enthusiasm and sales savvy. I timed her moments of peak expression to avoid awkward mid-motion captures. The result? Photos that feel alive, polished, and unmistakably her.

In addition…
Chris Marr
Just as dynamic, but in a different flavour. Chris was talking at an event that took place in a dark modernist concrete room (with zero natural light). Chris wanted to have me just “do my thing, in the moment”. I caught him mid-point proving.
A Passionate Moment
This remains one of my best-performing pins on Pinterest to date – I think because of its freeze-frame passionate moment.

Richard Tubb
Richard was constantly on the road, being booked to speak. It was a key component of both his personal brand and niche media business. Despite the veracity of speaking, he rarely received quality imagery when at events.
Staging it
We built in time for a set of photographs of him speaking (to the crew) on a shoot, so that he could add to his higher-quality assets for media kits where him making an appearance is up for negotiation. It worked very well in doing this.
Branding Photographer vs. Event Photographer: What’s the Difference?
Let’s take a quick apples-to-apples look at the differences:
Branding Photographer
Focuses on your personal brand goals.
Creates a shot list based on your needs.
Captures reusable, platform-ready visuals.
Prioritises your story.
Syncs with your performance style.
Event Photographer
Focuses on documenting the event.
Works from an organiser’s brief.
Captures one-time use event coverage.
Prioritises sponsor or venue coverage.
Moves rapidly between multiple sessions to catch the full event.
If your speaking appearance is part of a broader business strategy, don’t leave the visuals to chance.
